Sculpture park in the former stone quarry

On the site of a former Roman military road, a village founded in the 2nd Century A.D. was excavated here in 1962. The 442-meter high Szársomlyó Hill is the site of Southern Danubia's largest stone quarry, despite the fact that the authorities decided to protect the hill at the beginning of the last century; for this is the only habitat of the Hungarian crocus Colchicum Hungaricum and other rarities of flora and fauna. The ecological balance is so delicate that today the hill may only be visited with specially trained guides.
The Sculpture Park contains, amongst others, works carved from the limestone of the former quarry in which it stands. Sculptors from many countries have worked here in the past decades and thus the name of the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park has become world famous. Nearby stands the Gyimóthy Villa, recently restored as part of the Dráva Project, providing facilities for both sculptors and visitors. The building has also been extended and a new exhibition space provided as well as comfortable accommodation for visiting artists. The history of the park is also presented.
